The American Folk Festival is honoring a recently-deceased Bangor lawyer who was always a huge supporter of the event.

I met Marvin Glazier in 1989, when he served as my lawyer for my first divorce. I was scared, damaged, extremely shy, and concerned about my kids. But Marvin had a way about him, assuring me it was all going to work out. And thanks to his efforts, it did.

His name always seemed to be attached to high profile cases as he worked tirelessly to help local residents. But when he wasn't in his office or a courtroom, Marvin and his wife Sheri would look forward to the American Folk Festival every year. Marvin passed away last November at the age of 72, and he will be missed this summer on the Bangor Waterfront.

So, the American Folk Festival organizers are honoring his memory and his support with a new feature called the Marvin Glazier Discovery Artist. Executive Director Heather McCarthy says Glazier took it upon himself to discover a new artist at each and every festival, and so the event will remember his enthusiasm each year with an artist named for him.

This year's Marvin Glazier Discovery Artist is Orquesta el Macabeo, a 12-member band that performs Puerto Rico Salsa. Most of the musicians in the group have spent a good portion of their lives performing other genres, including rock, punk, ska, and reggae. This mix of backgrounds works to make Orquesta el Macabeo a unique blending of styles that is infectious and uplifting.

The 2018 Marvin Glazier Discovery Artist is supported by a generous gift from Vafiades, Brountas, and Kominsky. Glazier spent much of his life working for the Bangor law firm that he joined in 1969.

The American Folk Festival will bring this and many more artists to the Bangor waterfront August 24, 25, and 26th. Find more information and the list of artists whose names have been released so far at the American Folk Festival website.
