Alcohol And Speed Factors In Crash That Injures 3

Police say speed and alcohol were factors in a Bowdoin crash that injured three people, two of whom were thrown from the wreck.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the accident happened at about 10:30 Wednesday evening, off Route 138. 28-year-old Robert Mathews Jr., of Bath was driving a pickup truck when he lost control on a curve in heavy fog. The truck overturned several times before coming to rest on its roof, wedged against a group of trees.

Mathews and 16-year-old Emily Freeman of Topsham were thrown out of the cab of the truck, while a second passenger, 19-year-old Caleb Donaldson or Woolwich, had to be freed from the wreck by firefighters from Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, and Topsham. Police say there's no indication that any of the occupants were wearing seatbelts. All three were taken to Central Maine Medical Center with multiple injuries but there's no word on their conditions.

Police say speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. Charges against Mathews are expected after the District Attorney's office is consulted.
