An Abbot man who shot and killed his father before turning the gun on himself pleaded guilty to manslaughter this week.

According to the BDN, 38-year-old Zachary Grant says he was drunk the night of May 12th, when he went to his father's Parkman home, and doesn't remember anything about the events of that night. In addition, he says that he was hearing voices, having missed his dosage of anti-depressants that day. A neighbor stopped by at around 10:00 p.m. and found Zachary covered in blood. He said Grant was having difficulty speaking, but did tell him that he had killed his father.

The body of 61-year-old David Grant was found next to Zachary's truck in the driveway. He had been shot in the head three times. After killing his father, Zachary then turned the gun on himself. Although the bullet traveled behind his eye and into his brain, he survived.

Grant has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is expected to be sentenced on March 31st, at which time a more serious charge of murder will be dismissed, as part of a plea deal. He faces up to 30 years in prison for the manslaughter charge, as opposed to a potential life sentence if he'd been convicted of murder.
