A year ago today, on February 25th, 2015, a chain reaction on icy roads caused a huge pile-up on Interstate 95.

For us at Townsquare Media, it started with a text from a police officer acquaintance that a few cars were involved in a collision on the interstate. We were asked if we could announce to our listeners that roads were slippery and to be prepared for rescue crews near the Carmel exit of I-95. We passed the word along.

But before we knew it, word came in that the comparatively minor accident was now a full-scale pile-up. By the time it was over, police said 102 vehicles carrying 149 people were involved. Amazingly....incredibly....no one was killed.

Pictures began to come in, and showed a lengthy pile of twisted metal that only slightly resembled cars. Firefighters and police stood atop the wreckage and scratched their heads, trying to figure out how to even begin to clean it up.

I can't speak for anyone else, but the series of accidents that caused that pile-up and the pictures of the scene had a profound effect on me. I was driving a 1999 Corolla that, while still running beautifully, was too rusted to have been safe in a similar situation. I started looking for another car in the spring, and purchased my current, newer Toyota in July.

What a difference a year makes. Last year it was bitterly cold, with snow and ice-covered roads making driving treacherous. And this morning, we sat in the studios of Townsquare Media and watched thundershowers race across the horizon. All in all, I think I prefer the rain.
