The Fall moose hunt numbers are in from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IF&W) and it was a safe and successful year.

This is the fourth year the state has used aerial surveys to determine the moose population and health of the herd.

The department issued over 4-thousand permits and 2,971 moose hunters were successful in bagging a moose.

“Maine has a thriving moose population,” said Chandler Woodcock, Commissioner for the Department of Inland fisheries and Wildlife. “The moose hunt allows us to regulate the moose population in Maine, and it gives hunters the opportunity at the hunt of a lifetime."

The biologists are getting ready to determine moose hunt numbers for the Fall of 2014.

The number of moose permits available are based upon population numbers and the composition of the moose population in wildlife management districts.
