What a blessing it was for my grandson, Jeremiah Jewell, to meet and get a book signed by the famous Donn Fendler, the man who at the age of twelve got lost in the wilderness of Katahdin mountain. The book signing event took place at the Maine State Museum in Augusta July 12, 2014.

It was 75 years to the day, July 25, that Fendler came out of the woods after nine days of being lost. Many thought that he must have not survived the harsh conditions of the Maine wilderness, but he obviously did. The whole nation paid attention to the story. Even President Roosevelt took notice, giving Fendler a medal of valor which was on display at the museum along with a number of other artifacts.

Fendler has given countless talks through the years, and is especially fond of the children that come to meet and shake his hand. We can attest that his book signings are long in duration, as he takes the time to ask questions of all those--especially kids--that take the time to come and see him.Truly a remarkable man.

To better mark the day and honor Fendler, Maine Governor, Paul LePage, has proclaimed July 25th as 'Donn Fendler Day.'

We hope to see the full-length movie of Lost on a Mountain in Maine when it's released. The twenty minute short-film version is available now.

Here's the movie trailer:
