Six Killed In Weekend Crashes In Maine, 2016 Death Toll Now 129

Following a weekend in which six people were killed in traffic accidents in Maine, the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety reports the number of fatalities on Maine roads this year is now 129.

Director Lauren Stewart said the death toll for 2016 was trailing the number of traffic-related fatalities this time a year ago, 128, but that number was surpassed over the weekend as deadly accidents were reported in Hampden, Perham, near Medway and in the Millinocket area.

Stewart said 14 people were killed on Maine roads in Oct. 2016. This month's death toll now stands at 11.

Police said five of the six victims were not wearing seat belts. Stewart said wearing a seat belt is the best way to prevent serious injuries.
