A 5-year-old has died after he and his mother fell from a canoe in Outlet Stream.

WLBZ-TV reports the boy and his mother, Mollie Egold of Vassalboro, fell into the cold water at around 7 p.m. Monday, when the canoe flipped over. They were carried downstream before Egold was able to grab her son and swim to shore. Game Wardens say both mother and son were wearing life jackets but the water was ice cold.

Egold and her son were rushed to Inland Hospital where they were treated for hypothermia. The boy was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor by Lifeflight Monday evening, where he died overnight.

The Maine Warden Service is investigating this incident.
