Two people have died as the result of an apartment house fire in Palmyra this morning.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says firefighters are still at the scene of the fire at 81 Square Road, near the Canaan town line. Six residents of the building escaped the fire that was reported at about 3 a.m. The apartment house was already engulfed in flames when crews arrived.

Two people were originally reported missing, but their bodies have since been discovered in the rubble. Crews will recover the deceased later this morning once the fire is extinguished and will take them to the State Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies. Officials have not released the identities of the deceased.

We'll update this story as more details become available.
