A 17-year-old from Cape Elizabeth has passed away from injuries sustained in a car accident over the weekend.

The Portland Press Herald reports Cole Amorello died Monday. He'd been hospitalized since the accident that happened shortly after five o'clock Saturday morning on Old Ocean House Road. The Cape Elizabeth High School junior was driving a BMW sedan north when he failed to make a turn and crashed into some trees. Police say speed appeared to have been a factor in the crash.

Amorello was well-known for his success in the theater program and for always being able to make people laugh. Principal Jeffrey Shed emailed parents to let them know of the student's passing, adding "Please keep Cole, his mom, Sandi, and his older siblings, Olivia and Holden, in your thoughts and prayers."

Students at Cape Elizabeth H.S. were scheduled to take their SAT tests today, but can opt to take them later in the month. Grief counselors will be on hand today to help students and faculty cope.

Amorello's accident is reminscent of another in August of 2000, when 17-year-old Cape Elizabeth High School student Kevin Brady died after crashing his car. Speed was also considered a factor in that accident.
