10 Things Downtown Bangor Needs

Townsquare Media Bangor

Even if some of these things will never happen, we like to dream. Here are 10 things we think downtown Bangor is missing.

What do you think downtown Bangor needs to make it better?

1

A Hot Dog Stand

Just like the big cities, Bangor needs one of those carts with a striped umbrella and a vendor slinging dogs on the go! Even better we could make it a red hot dog vendor so it’s authentic.

A Trolley Service

Bangor’s downtown streets used to be bustling with trolley cars and we think it’s time to bring them back! How cool would it be to have a trolley from the parking garage area to the Waterfront Concert stage?! A scenic ride and you wouldn’t have to worry about being run over by busy traffic!

Street Performers

Last year, Bangor attempted to bring more performance art to the streets of downtown by leaving a piano in one of the court yards. From time to time you will see a person singing solo with a guitar and a hat in the parks, but we want more! Bangor is a city full of talent, and what better way for people to see what you have to offer than to offer it for free entertainment!?

A Really Tall, Unique Building

Bangor’s skyline has changed quite a bit over the years, and we think it’s time for another big change. We think downtown Bangor needs a really tall building, something like the Seattle Space Needle! Currently the tallest building in Bangor is the Verizon Building at 118 feet. We can do better than that!

5

An Ice Cream Shop

Bucksport downtown has Wahl’s Dairy Port, Ellsworth has Blueberry Hill, and Bar Harbor has Ben and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium. You, of course, can get ice cream around town but why is there no ice cream place near the waterfront!? We scream for ice cream!

A ‘You Are Here” Map

Something like they have at the mall, we need a map of downtown with a directory and a pin staying where you are at the moment. Even for the locals, it can be tricky getting around downtown with all the one way streets and ally ways. A map or two couldn’t hurt!

Somewhere Open 24/7

Have you ever gone out on a Saturday night and come closing time you just aren’t ready to go home? Why is there no where within walking distance to get a cup of coffee at 3¬†a.m.? Or how about a 24/7 burger joint? Nothing like greasy burgers after a few adult beverages!

A Big Stephen King Statue

Isn’t it strange we have a statue commemorating all of Bangor’s most famous people from Hannibal Hamlin to Paul Bunyan, but nothing for Stephen King! He is without a doubt Bangor’s biggest celebrity and his home a local landmark. We are thinking downtown needs a huge statue depicting the author as a character from one of his novels! Or maybe that one of a young King with a shotgun!

A Time and Temperature Sign

You’ve probably seen the time and temperature flashing from the top of one of Portland’s biggest buildings while visiting Portland or even by just driving by. We think this is something that would be beneficial in Bangor, especially as a time board for the New Year’s Ball Drop.

10

Splash Pad/Playground

Think of how much use a splash pad would get during events like the American Folk Festival and The Color Run! Also, other than the Discovery Museum there doesn’t seem to be much to offer the kiddos! So why not put a playground near the waterfront?!
